FROM SAN FRANSISCO TO HELSINKI
We brought prominent Nordic startups from the San Francisco Bay Area to Helsinki to meet Nordic startups that want to grow to American markets. The program provided the startups with two days of full packed program of meetings with other Nordic startups in Helsinki with an aim to help and inspire the Nordic startups to grow abroad. We also organised some meetings with political leaders like princes and ambassadors. The prominent Nordic startups from Bay area shared their stories and learnings about their experiences in working overseas. This is to inspire startups from Nordic region to scale outside the Nordics. Nordic companies from Bay area are be extremely helpful just by sharing their network to good customers, reliable consults, VC’s and angel investors in the US. They can give tips and worn about the everyday challenges like how to rent an office or what kind of contract of employment you should do with local employees etc.
THE IDEA BEHDIND THE INITIATIVE
Over the past decade, approximately 10% of all billiondollar exits have come from the Nordics. Considering that the Nordics comprise 0.3% of the world’s population and the region attracts only under 1% of global venture capital financing, this is an astonishing number. The goal of this joint project together with Aaltoes, SUP46 and #CPHFTW is to bring Nordic founders from the San Francisco Bay Area and US, share their learning but also meet political leaders and decision makers from the Nordics in order to improve the internationalization process in political level for the future.
The goal is to connect these startups to the top Nordic growth companies and the potential next billiondollar ideas of our region. We want to see this trip culminating in Nordic companies expanding and receiving funding from the US at both higher and faster phase than before in the next two years.
Companies created great connections and there is really open attitude of sharing knowledge. It would be important to keep these kind of gatherings and Nordic networking going on so companies can dodge the pitfalls of going to new market and so improve their probabilities of succeeding.
THE QUICK GUIDE TO THE VALLEY
To pass on this knowledge to Nordic Startups that couldn’t make it to the gatherings we made also a booklet that answers to the most common questions that Nordic startups were asking about “How to scale in the US”.
