COLLIDING NATIONAL VR-ECOSYSTEMS

The Junction X Slush PLAY VR-Jam was a free 2-day hackathon, where VR enthusiasts from the Nordics and rest of the world came together and collaborated on creating Virtual Reality projects under a time-restrained challenge. 

The participants were a mix of students, VR professionals and VR researchers. By bringing all these stakeholders together in the booming VR ecosystem of Iceland, we believe that truly innovative projects will be given a start. In addition to all this, Nordic participants get to connect with fellow VR developers from all around the world and enjoy the high-quality Slush PLAY VR-conference, after attending the workshop.

 

PURPOSE AND GOAL

The purpose was to bring developers from the Nordics under the same roof and create innovative projects in just two days. Also fly in influential developers from countries all the way from USA to Egypt, to participate in the jam and showcase and share the talent of the Nordics. Do all this under a unified banner of Slush, Europe’s leading startup conference, and Junction, Europe’s largest hackathon. 

The goal was to form new connections between the VR communities in the Nordics, and link them to VR communities in countries like USA, Netherlands and United Kingdom. During the 2-day hackathon, teams form to create seeds of future projects, possibly starting an international collaboration on Virtual Reality projects. In addition to this, we are supporting the internationalization of

Finnish Virtual Reality startups through cooperation with the Finnish Virtual Reality Association and VR Gaming startup Mindfield Games. These companies are willing to mentor participants of the Jam.

 

PROGRAM

Schedule for the event was mainly focused for developing new VR games. For best result with only 24 hours we provided all equipment already configured so participants were able to start hacking only two hours after opening.

THE RESULT OF VR-JAM

End of the event there was six fully playable VR games with all having different approaches to the inner workings of VR

entertainment. Some came up with new game mechanics, some with new forms of storytelling. For example one team created a two-player local multiplayer game for the HTC Vive, that used the controllers in a way never seen before. 

Games were made with Unity game engine and there was two hardware options used: Oculus RIFT CV1 and HTC Vive. All teamsalso had time on the Slush Play stage to present their productions for representatives from different VR -communities and companies around Nordics.There is at the end of this document a link to video which shows implementations of VR-Jam 2016. 

Goals for introducing different VR communities were also achieved during VR-Jam and Slush Play. New connections between the VR communities in the Nordics, and links to VR communities in countries like USA, Netherlands and United Kingdom were made especially after intensive hacking time was over and resultswere presented in Slush Play conference.
